About the Piece:

In Dēdisce Ut Discas - Unlearn So That You May Learn, I draw from Shona sculptural practices to explore the construction of identity. A central figure extends her voice, arms, and intuition to embrace forms attached to her sense of self. Emerging within a nourishing, womb-like space and woven into the canvas, these forms suggest attachments that can be unstitched. Through gestures of attachment and release, the work asks what we might shed in order to embrace new ways of being.

About the Artist:

Rebecca Fowke is a Zimbabwean-American artist based in New London, CT. 

Fowke’s practice centers transcultural themes to create space for reflection, continuity, and collective connection. Through mixed media and repurposed materials, she creates forms, often archetypes and totems, that serve as contemporary vessels for ritual and spiritual practice. Using marks, beads, and gifts of the earth, her work grounds sensory experience while giving form to the unseen. 

Working within liminal space, her practice unfolds as an investigation into the intersection of cultural identity and artistic practice. In an increasingly interconnected world, her works consider the traditions, symbols, and shared experience that persist to reveal the thread that connects us all across culture. 

She honors the indigenous practices of her heritage, as well as the traditions and communities that continue to nourish and inspire her work.
